Simone Biles and Kanye West are about to make A’s owner John Fisher even richer
I have no idea what a Yurchenko double pike is, but Simone Biles became the first woman to pull off the move in a gymnastics competition on Saturday night.
Somewhere, John Fisher was probably fist pumping.

Most of the A’s owner’s fortune comes from his family’s role in creating the Gap, Inc. clothing empire that also owns Athleta, a women’s sports apparel company. In April, Biles left Nike for a six-year deal with Athleta, and this is about as good as a competitive return as you can imagine.
Biles, 24, hadn’t competed in nearly 600 days but went viral on Twitter and figures to be in the spotlight for the next two months leading up to the Tokyo Olympics, which begin on July 23.
This is a big summer for the Fisher’s business enterprises.
Kanye West’s Yeezy Gap line reportedly is set to drop in the next few months and some financial projections figure it could produce $1 billion in sales by 2023 — which also happens to be the final year of Matt Olson and Matt Chapman’s contracts.
So, will some of that Simone and Yeezy money trickle down to the A’s? Lol fat chance.
Before the pandemic, Gap’s stock ticker (GPS) was trading at about $17. It bottomed out on April 2 to $5.65 before storming back with last year’s Yeezy Gap news. Now GPS is trading at about $32.50 — meaning a 47.7 percent increase since before the pandemic. Fisher has nearly doubled his GPS value in that span and recovered with plenty of time to help supply the A’s payroll this offseason.
No money for Marcus Semien to be found, though. Or Liam Hendriks. And the front office had to pull major strings to find $9 million from the Texas Rangers in the Elvis Andrus trade, to sign Yusmeiro Petit, Sergio Romo, Mitch Moreland and Trevor Rosenthal (to a deferred deal). Yeesh.
So, whenever you see Biles or West come across your screen, just think about the A’s payroll, the closing championship window and Fisher’s aversion to seeing anything but the franchise’s bottom line.
