Dave Kaval trolls A’s fans with tweet from Vegas Golden Knights game

Dave Kaval knows what he’s doing.

Around the bottom of the fourth inning in Monday night’s A’s game against the Seattle Mariners, Kaval sent out this tweet from the Vegas Golden Knights’ playoff matchup against the Minnesota Wild.

Not a good look from the A’s team president.

A few minutes later, Jarred Kelenic mashed a solo shot to give the Mariners a three-run lead that set them up for a 4-2 win over the A’s. But you need some solace, A’s fans? The Knights also lost 4-2.

The optics are bad here for a few reasons.

Earlier in the day, reports surfaced out of Portland that Kaval, owner John Fisher, executive VP Billy Beane and executive Sandy Dean will fly to the PDX next month to check out the city as a possible relocation destination.

The A’s brass is in Vegas this week, of course, to meet with the mayor and do relocation homework.

Sending that tweet out in the middle of the A’s game, while your own franchise is playing at the Coliseum, has to be seen as a deliberate move. He totally could have recorded the video and sent it out Tuesday saying something like, “Had a great time at #StanleyCup playoffs! Thanks @GoldenKnights,” or whatever and it would not have been so bad.

It’s also worth mentioning that there is a lot of crossover between A’s fans and Sharks fans, and the Vegas Golden Knights are a San Jose rival.

It just seems like a slap in the face to fans, who have no real say in the matter while the franchise, city of Oakland and other vested parties try to figure the stadium situation out.

Will this video spur faster action from Oakland’s city council? Probably not. Will it rub the dwindling A’s fan base the wrong way? Absolutely.

If Kaval isn’t supporting the A’s during a game and would rather put the spotlight on the team’s Vegas visit, it has to be hard for him to expect other people to pay attention to his players and on-field product.

This may be a case of “any attention is good attention” from Kaval and the A’s as they try to amplify their relocation threat, but he took a big risk with this move and will likely have to live with some backlash when he comes back to the Bay to interact with fans.

Simply put: It was a troll job and he had to know it.
