Andrew Chafin needs houseboat, looks like A’s legend in the making

Andrew Chafin needs a houseboat, folks.

The new A’s southpaw reliever — acquired from the Chicago Cubs Monday for minor league outfielder Greg Deichmann and minor league righty Daniel Palencia– was something of a cult hero at his previous career stops with the Arizona Diamondbacks and with the Cubbies. Now he’s bringing that same energy to the Bay.

On Thursday morning, Chafin sent out a tweet asking A’s fans to help him find a houseboat.

If his ridiculous mustache wasn’t a dead give away — Chafin is hilarious. He became a quick fan favorite with the Chicago Cubs once he joined the team midway through the 2020 season.

If Chafin ends up at Jack London Square, Alameda, Berkeley Marina or Sausalito on a houseboat, it wouldn’t be the first time he had a unique living arrangement. Back in 2016, Chafin lived in an RV while pitching for the D-backs.

If you pause at the 1:10 mark of the video above, you can see Chafin’s fridge, stocked with just water, Coors Light, cinnamon rolls and some cookies.

“Got two different type of water,” he said while pointing to the Coors Light.

Later in the video, Chafin also shows off some of his leatherwork on a bow and arrow quiver he made in his spare time. Then he busts out a bow-and-arrow that he uses to go fishing.

The Bay Area isn’t like rural Ohio, where Chafin’s from, but hopefully he can find a little bit of the simple life out on a houseboat.

For more insight to Chafin’s lifestyle I suggest checking out his YouTube channel, which he updates with occasional farming videos. I suspect he and fellow country boy J.B. Wendelken will become fast friends.

He also showed off his Bayliner back in April.

Chafin made his A’s debut on Wednesday, striking out a batter while allowing a hit. He totes a 2.03 ERA in 44 appearances and has 40 scoreless outings this year. The 31-year-old relies on a sinker-slider combo and sits around 92-93 mph with his heater. He is making $2.25 million this season and has a mutual $5.25 million option for next year. At that price tag, he might have to find a houseboat for 2022.

Chafin figures to slot into high-leverage situations instantly, getting in the mix with other top A’s bullpen southpaw Jake Diekman.
